UNIVERSITY OF MARY – CHAPEL COURTYARD
This interior courtyard is adjacent to the historic Annunciation Chapel, designed by renowned architect Marcel Breuer. Axtman was commissioned to assist in the redevelopment of this important space. The weathered redwood pergola was replaced with Ipe, a Brazilian hardwood that will endure our extreme North Dakota climates. Seating walls and planter boxes were constructed of concrete and granite veneering. Colored and stamped concrete was used to mimic the original natural stone hardscape. Drainage was improved with a new storm sewer system that runs beneath this space. A bronze statue depicting two monks in an embrace was placed central to the courtyard. The statue, a replica of a sculpture in Belgium known as the “Kiss of Peace,” has become a focal point of reflection on campus. The result of the design has been a resounding success. This space has transitioned into a gathering hub for study, contemplation, and social events.
